Re: Volvo Ocean Race 2011-2012
Noticias del equipo Camper: reunión de Familia
Full house for CAMPER in New Zealand Chris Cameron It has been a pivotal week for Camper in the Volvo Ocean Race, as the full team was welcomed to the Emirates Team New Zealand base at Auckland’s Viaduct Harbour. The complete sailing and shore team will now be based in Auckland until the boat is shipped to Europe in July. While the sailing team and some additional shore team officially started in March, for the past nine months there have been close to 70 people working on this project... The Camper and Emirates Team New Zealand shore crew includes sail makers, riggers, boat builders, electronic engineers, a chef, a physiotherapist, a fitness trainer, logistic support, sponsorship support, a media team and an administration team of more than 30 people. The full operational setup on site also includes a functioning mobile shore base, which mirrors the team base that will be shipped around the world during the race. Camper skipper Chris Nicholson said, “While the sailing team and some additional shore team officially started in March, for the past nine months there have been close to 70 people working on this project. From our design director Nick Holroyd, who has been working with Emirates Team New Zealand naval architect Marcelino Botin and Giovanni Belgrano our structural engineer and his team. Through to our sail designer Burns Fallow and his team of sailmakers, our electronics expert Greg Lewis and our shore manager Neil Cox who have been dedicated to ensuring that this project stays on track. In addition, we have a fantastic ‘back room’ team to look after the admin side of things and this work behind the scenes is one of the major factors that have kept us on schedule and will allow the sailing team to focus on the job ahead." The next five months will be a massive logistical challenge, as the team manages a mobile base and office for over 25 people, launch and test the new Camper Volvo Open 70, and puts in place the infrastructure that will ensure the accommodation, travel and boat logistics for the team over the next 18 months. Estanislao Carpio, Camper Chief Operating Officer said, "Camper are truly excited to reach yet another milestone and welcome everyone to this exciting adventure. We are incredibly proud of the design and build team who have worked tirelessly to deliver the build on time, and we are enthused at having the full team on board. The campaign has truly come alive and we look forward to Camper rolling out of the shed in mid-April.” Emirates Team New Zealand Managing Director Grant Dalton spoke about the future, "It is great to see the team fully operational at the Emirates Team New Zealand base in Auckland. The months ahead are crucial to ensure the success of the project. The more we prepare now, the better position we will be in when we cross the start line in Alicante. Eight months seems a long time away but with a project of this size it will go very quickly. Central to this will be the bringing the boat up to speed as soon as possible after its launch. We are very lucky to have such a fantastic location to undertake the extensive sail testing programme, we have a range of conditions on our doorstep here in New Zealand, which will provide a stunning backdrop for this period in the campaign." To coincide with the final stages of the build, a small group of the sailing and shore team has been on site in Auckland since the New Year working across navigation, rigging and electronics. The Camper Volvo Open 70, which has been under construction at Cookson Boats since last August is in the final stages of the build. The remaining systems are being fitted and the boat is being prepared for the livery to be added, before finally being transported to the team’s base in central Auckland in April. Re: Volvo Ocean Race 2011-2012

Re: Volvo Ocean Race 2011-2012
Noticias del Equipo Camper ETNZ
Emirates Team New Zealand’s new round-the-world race yacht CAMPER left the builder’s yard in Auckland at 4.30am today, just a year after the project was announced. The 70ft yacht was trucked to the team’s Viaduct Harbour base where it will be commissioned this week. The build started at Cookson Boats in August last year, taking close to 35,000 man-hours. Over the next few days, keel, rudder, dagger boards, mast and rigging will be fitted and electronic, electrical and hydraulic systems will commissioned. CAMPER will be sailing on the Waitemata Harbour by the end of the week before setting off for sea trials during which the yacht will call at five east coast ports at the end of April and in early May. The yacht will leave Auckland on April 25 for Tauranga. Other ports include Gisborne (April 29), Wellington (May 2), Dunedin (May 5) and Lyttelton May 7-8. CAMPER’s mission is the Volvo Ocean Race, a 38,000 nautical mile race around the world that starts at Alicante, Spain, at the end of October. Auckland is a stopover port. The fleet will spend three weeks in Auckland in March-April 2012. Sunday was almost a year to the day that Camper, the Spanish footwear brand, and Emirates Team New Zealand confirmed their entry in the Volvo Ocean Race 2011/12. CAMPER was designed by the Emirates Team New Zealand design team led by Nick Holroyd with principal designer Marcelino Botin. Emirates Team New Zealand managing director Grant Dalton: “This is a great day for us as a team. Everyone has worked hard to meet all our deadlines. They have delivered CAMPER on time, just nine months after we first started the build.” “To be able to stand back and see the amazing job that they guys have done and now see her in her full livery, is quite humbling. I am very excited about going out sailing towards the end of this week.” For Camper, this is their first foray into ocean racing, and the company’s Founder and Chairman, Lorenzo Fluxá, said: “This is quite an historic moment for everyone at Camper and the start of a new adventure for our brand. The boat build has been a great experience for all of us, so precise in its execution that all we can do is congratulate all those involved in bringing ‘ the CAMPER’ to life.”

Botadura del Camper ETNZ
Megan Reeves, partner of skipper Chris Nicholson, pours champagne over the bow. CAMPER, the yacht Emirates Team New Zealand will campaign in the Volvo Race, was launched at the team’s Viaduct Harbour, Auckland, base late this afternoon. Tomorrow, after the yacht’s hydraulic systems, which operate the canting keel, are tested the mast will be stepped and the yacht prepared for its maiden sail later in the week. The yacht was trucked to the team’s base before dawn only on Sunday. For the rest of this week, shore and sailing crews will test yacht systems before the build phase of the CAMPER campaign is over and sea trials start. After a week trialling off Auckland, the yacht leaves for a voyage down the east coast of New Zealand calling at five ports – Tauranga, Gisborne, Wellington, Dunedin and Lyttelton.
