Accidente frente a Crocia Fuegoabordo
February 7, 2008 A water bomber flies over Turkish freighter Und Adriyatik off the Croatian coast near the northern Adriatic town of Rovinj. The ship caught fire close to Croatian territorial waters on Wednesday and was likely to sink, but all crew members and passengers had been rescued. (Reuters) Ecological disaster threatens as burning freighter approaches Croatian coast ZAGREB, Croatia: A Turkish cargo ship — on fire and carrying 200 trucks and tons of hazardous material — was moving closer Thursday to the Croatian coast, and officials were working to avert an ecological disaster. The ship — the Und Adriyatik — was pushed by overnight winds to within 5 miles (8 kilometers) of Croatia's Brijuni Islands in the northern Adriadic Sea, local firefighting chief Klaudio Karlovic said. The islands are home to one of Croatia's national parks, and are a popular tourist destination. Two Croatian tugboats were dousing the ship with water, and Croatian officials prepared to encircle the ship with maritime dams in case its cargo spilled. Independent maritime expert Roland Ruzic said ecological disaster was certain if the ship sank, and could take months or even yeas to clean up the pollution. Five maritime salvage specialists from Dutch company Smit Salvage B.V. were boarding the blazing ship Thursday to determine how to extinguish the fire, the firefighting chief said. |
