How did the Kiteboat Project get started?
In 1997, I first began attaching kites to boats, starting with surfing canoes, small sailing catamarans and some large motored multihulls. My team and I completed several island crossings in Hawaii during this time, including crossing the Molokai channel with a kite-powered surfing canoe.

In 2006, I moved the bulk of my testing operation to the San Francisco Bay, under the umbrella of Makani Power. In 2008 we began working with hydrofoil test platforms, and at the end of that year, the project became its own full-time operation.

In 2010, we launched K1, our first completely custom-built foiling kiteboat, and in 2011, we moved toward a trimaran hull design, similar to the boat we use today. Since then, we have constantly been upgrading the foils, kites, and controls to improve the system.
