News From On board: Last night we sailed through the straights of Gibraltar missing the Traffic Separation scheme and the break water off Tarifa by the skin of our teeth. It was a fast and exciting ride with our eyes skinned for shipping and other obstacles. As the sun went down we had our A4 and full main up heading for Gibraltar. We could see Nannini and Peggs just behind us, slowly catching us up. We gybed off Gibraltar and put one reef in before gybing back to sail parallel to the TSS. The wind was increasing slowly and then all of a sudden we went from flat water to large over falls and winds gusting to 30 knots. Nick came on deck to put another reef in but we were surfing at rather fast speeds making it rather tricky to get the main down, however we soon reached Tarifa and the wind was now over 30 knots. Phillippa’s eyes were getting bigger and bigger as we approached the light house off the breakwater. We dropped the A4 faster than ever before and did a granny tack round to avoid the break water. We got the A4 off the deck and sailed bareheaded for a while. We had a cup of tea to regain our thoughts and get through the rest of the straights. The waves were large at times but eventually we put in another granny tack to head south towards Marocco. Today has been a chance to catch our breath back, but it has not been easy. We have had very little wind and to try and keep the boat moving can be a challenge. Nick went up the rig earlier and we replaced a halyard the wasn’t looking too strong after last nights gale force winds. All is well on board we have seen Financial Crisis on the horizon and spoke to them about their exciting times last night. It sounds like they had similar tactics to us.

Trasluchada para salir del peñón y un rizo antes de volver a trasluchar en paralelo al DST. El viento subía lento... y de golpe pasamos de mar plano a rasca y rachas de 30 nudos. Nick subió para meter otro rizo, pero surfeábamos muy rápido y no era fácil bajar la mayor. En seguida llegamos a Tarifa con viento de más de 30 nudos. Los ojos de Phillippa se abrian a medida que nos acercábamos al faro del espigón. Bajamos el A4 más rápido que nunca e hicimos un bordo para evitar el espigón. Metimos el A4 dentro y navegamos sin vela de proa un rato. Nos tomamos un te y un rato para pensar. Las olas eran grandes pero hicimos otro bordo hacia Marruecos. Hoy era el dia para coger fuerzas, pero no ha sido fácil. Mantener el barco en marcha con muy poco viento no es fácil. Nick ha subido al palo a cambiar la driza que no parecía muy fuerte tras el temporal de anoche. Todo bién a bordo, hemos visto a Financial Crisis en el horizonte y hablado con ellos de la noche movidita. Parece que tienen una táctica parecida a la nuestra.
