Why a ship is a "she"?
Because:
The rigging costs more than the hull.
Inside all is cordage and outside all is paint.
She needs a lot of men to keep her up.
She needs a pilot to put her on the buoys.
She shows her topsides and hides her bottom.
It takes a lot of paint to keep her good-looking.
It takes an experienced man to steer her.
The problem is not the initial price, but the upkeep.
