This Wednesday morning, the B to B fleet made up of 8 Imoca 60 monohulls and 8 single-handed skippers has been experiencing epic weather, the likes of which even experienced sailor Mike Golding has seen just twice before, and that was in the Southern Ocean!
Mike’s night message from onboard Gamesa says it all…
"It feels like we are right on the edge all the time. It's not the mean wind speed which is the problem, it is the gusts that we are experiencing. We can be sailing along in 25-26kts and then have gusts of 35-40 for up to 5 minutes, which means you wake up on your ear and consequently find it really difficult to sleep. I was worried about it the first couple of times it happened and reduced sail but was losing miles so the solent was furled away and the A7 [fractional gennaker] came out."
"It was good when we were going up north, because there was a bit of everything going on, now it is straight line stuff pretty much. Still one of the downsides of the gate is that it is now looking like my gybe will come at the worst possible time, when the GRIB’s [weather files] are showing 60 odd knots, so that is not going to be much fun. I can understand Alex being a bit pee’d off but to be fair when the gate was called the lateral separation was only 20 or 30 miles, but the trouble is on the leg after the gate Alex will fly the biggest thing he can fly and I am afraid I won’t. I want to get home with a boat under me.”
Our thoughts go out to the Transat B to B fleet as all 8 skippers Battle to Brittany, Louis Burton on Bureau Vallee bringing up the rear.
