The wind is now gusting 40 knots. At least we are running with it, under triple reefed main and staysail. The autopilot is working like a star as we surf down monster waves. We have several methods of recording our speed and we are starting to get some impressive numbers. Maybe not up to the standards of Cessna Citation but nontheless 23.4 knots under autopilot on a
40 foot boat is quite a moving experience. That speed was recorded on the Garmin handheld GPS, so the speed damping is probably giving slightly over enthusiastic readings. The Adrena navigation software damps the readings from our primary GPS over a slightly longer period and recorded an average of 19.51 knots in 38.5 knots of wind. (As I write this the wind has increased to 42.4 knots) The Garmin and the Adrena are both reading our speed over the ground (SOG) which is affected by the currents, but our log, which measures our speed through the water recorded 20.93 knots.
The weather forecast from the Australian met office says we should be getting SW/NW winds of 25-33 knots with rough seas and a moderate swell.
