Creo que no, aunque no estoy seguro. De hecho sé que leí acerca de ese tema hará unos diez años y desde entonces me he asegurado de que nunca se quedara sin pilas... y de que estas no estropearan el compartimento al derramarse.
Lo enciendo ocasionalmente y siempre coge posición. Por tanto asumo que es gracias a mantenerlo "alimentado" que aún funciona correctamente.
Lo que creo haber leído es que poseen una pila interna que guarda ciertos datos de base (almanaque) que le permiten inicializar. Con el tiempo, esa pila se acaba y corres el riesgo de perder esos datos de inicializacion y por tanto el GPS se queda "tonto".
Tengo la impresión de que los GPS actuales funcionan de otro modo, pero por si acaso yo siempre los enciendo todos al menos una vez al mes hasta que cogen posición.
Tanto el Raymarine del plotter como el del pincho USB funcionan bien a pesar de sus mas de 10 años, así que mal no les hará eso de encenderlos de vez en cuando ¿no?

Bueno, no pierdas toda la esperanza. Al menos parece que hay un metodo para que puedan recargar los datos de almanaque:

EOW Fix for ALL older Garmin receivers that have problems
Garmin has advised us that the following procedure should work for all receivers which might have problems with the EOW rollover:
1) Turn on your receiver.
2) Place it into AUTOLOCATE MODE. Note: No other mode will do. Select a country won't do.
3) Place the GPS in an outdoor location where it has a full sky view.
4) Within an hour it should get 3D lock.
5) Leave it outside for as long as possible up to about 12 hours so it can collect ephemeris data from all of the SVs. (If you stop in the middle, it is OK, but the GPS will have to collect the other data later which is just fine too.
After you have done this, most Garmin GPS receivers should work just fine. Yep.. Those Garmin guys did not do it perfectly in their older receivers. Still, the fix is pretty simple and easy to do. PLEASE let me know any Garmin receivers that this DOES NOT work with. Please include the firmware revision for the unit.
