Ban on the discharge of sewage from recreational craft
As from 1 April 2015, recreational craft being used within the territorial waters of Sweden, that is within 12 nautical miles of the coast, are banned from discharging sewage into the sea, lakes and internal waters. The ban applies to all recreational craft, except those listed for preservation, as well as to foreign recreational craft being used within the territorial waters of Sweden.
Sewage refers to any discharge of waste water and other waste from any type of toilet, including portable toilets.
A bucket, pot or similar does not count as a type of toilet and therefore falls outside the scope of the discharge ban. However, Swedish law contains regulations (in the Swedish Environmental Code's general rules of consideration) prescribing that anybody spending time out of doors shall take every possible precaution not to contaminate the environment. Discharging sewage into the water is not a precautious behaviour, as the sewage contains the eutrophicating nutrients phosphorus and nitrogen.

Swedish Register of Ships
Mandatory registration
According to Chapter 1 of the Swedish Maritime Code (SFS 1994:1009), a ship is a vessel having a length over all of at least twelve metres and a maximum breadth of at least four metres. Other vessels are called boats. According to Chapter 2, all Swedish ships shall be registered in the Register of Ships. The only exception are ships owned by the State and which are not used in commercial service. Note that this applies regardless of what the ship is used for, i.e., including recreational crafts that are considered ships according to the definition above. Boats in commercial service shall be registered in the Register of Boats if the hull length is at least five metres. The Maritime Registry keeps both the Register of Ships and the Register of Boats.

Vessel Equipment
As a general rule, all equipment placed onboard or replaced should be type-approved.
Rules on how vessels must be equipped are stated in the regulations issued by the Swedish Maritime Administration. Each regulation may cover a certain equipment category and be applicable to several vessel categories or may cover a certain vessel category and contain rules on several equipment categories.
Type approval of equipment is governed by an EC directive. The directive is a “harmonised” directive, which means that a product that has been type approved by a notified body in one member state in the European Community may be placed on any Community vessel (regardless of flag). The Directive took force with the Swedish Maritime Administration’s regulations and general guidelines (SJÖFS 1999:8, reprinted 2003:2) on marine equipment. Any exceptions from the requirement are specified in the regulations that specify equipment standards.
