Beryl weakens to tropical storm en route to Caribbean

Beryl had become the first hurricane of the Atlantic season Friday,
but it weakened to a tropical storm Saturday. The U.S. National
Hurricane Center said Beryl’s maximum sustained winds had lessened
to 45 mph (75 kph) by late Saturday. It was centered 495 miles
(795 kilometers) east-southeast of the Lesser Antilles and was moving
west at 18 mph (30 kph).
