Yesterday at 12.30pm Nov. 6 2023. We were attacked by a pod of 3 juvenile orcas (we think that they were 3). Our approx. position was 35’ 54.00N 005’ 48.00W. We were travelling with main sail, jib and both engines on travelling 8 knots. By the time we saw the orcas, it was less then 1 minute before they reached our boat and hit the rudders. We threw sand off the back but obviously too late as they took 1 rudder off completely just leaving the shaft and more then half of the other. They left just as quickly as they came. We had organized a steel pipe to bang and flares to shoot but did not react fast enough. The reality is that they are really fast and heading straight for the rudder.
It’s great to read everyone’s advice, maps and comments but no matter which line at the western side of the straight you choose to cross, you put yourself in their territory and some are luckier than others.
Fortunately we are safe and back in La Linea for repairs.
