Golding pleased with Ecover 3
Mike Golding has just begun the fourth day of his 1500-mile additional qualifier required by the rules of the Vendée Globe following the modification to his keel. On Friday, he dropped off near the breakwater in Plymouth, the members of his team, who had accompanied him for the first leg of the journey down the English Channel, before heading out to the Atlantic alone. After passing thorough a ridge of high pressure, Mike picked up a south-westerly flow, which should enable him to get back to Plymouth later this morning. Averaging just under twenty knots and reaching peaks of 24 knots, Mike says he is very pleased with the performance of his monohull and is taking advantage of the conditions to test his new automatic pilot and software. While Ecover 3 is being put through her paces, the British yachtsman is nevertheless remaining cautious, especially not wanting to break anything with less than three months to go before the start of the Vendée Globe. During the next fortnight, Mike wll be based in Plymouth carrying out sail testing with Dee Caffari and Aviva.
