Ernest Hemingway's 40-footblack-hulled fishing boat, the Pilar, will be getting the once-overfrom Dana Hewson, the vice presidentfor watercraft preservation atMystic Seaport in Connecticut, TheAssociated Press reported. Mr. Hewsonand members of the HemingwayPreservation Foundation have goneto Cuba, where he will examine andphotograph the boat at La FincaVigia, Hemingway's estate.

In 2005,even though the Pilar was not in theUnited States, the National Trust forHistoric Preservation placed it on itslist of America's 11 Most EndangeredHistoric Places. Hemingwaysailed the Pilar when he lived inCuba from 1939 to 1960 and is said tohave conceived some of his finestworks, including "The Old Man andthe Sea," while onboard. The Hemingwayfoundation is working withthe Cuban government to preservethe Pilar as well as Finca Vigia anddocuments, photographs and booksstored there amid concerns that thepapers may eventually be damagedby warm, humid conditions.
