También pertenece al "universo lingüístico español". Creo recordar, de una discusión con amigos sobre el significado hace ya mucho tiempo, que el término se generó a raíz de la instalación de las primeras luminarias de gas. Pero no me hagas mucho caso que estoy hablando de memoria.
