I have a Sabb 10 single cylinder in a canal narrowboat. Built in 1973, It was overhauled a couple of years ago and since then has smoked badly and gets through 1 litre of oil (50% of sump capacity) in one oil change cycle (50 hours). I know the engineer who did the work as a personal friend, and trust him completely, but he has not yet come up with an answer to this problem. He has replaced the liner, pistons and rings twice, and is certain they are within the proper tolerances.
any suggestion for other possible cause?

Im have rebuilt quite a few engines in my day. I must admit I have never worked on a Sabb though.
If its a 2 stroke I can't help you with the information provided, If its a 4 stroke check the crankcase ventilation, I have seen them build up crankcase presure and push oil up past the rings, It could be that simple
