33rd America's Cup: Full race training for Alinghi 5 in Valencia

Friday, 29 January 2010

Taking advantage of today’s more favourable conditions, Alinghi 5 and its crew members train for nine hours and return satisfied

The cool site of today was viewed from the roof terrace atop the Alinghi base. Looking out over Malvarossa beach on an idyllic winter’s day – resplendent with blue skies, warm temperatures and abundant sunshine – two sloops tacked lazily back and forth in the light winds. But they were daysailers, perhaps no more than 25 feet long.

Then, it was spotted: Alinghi 5’s 17-storey mast at first appeared to be a radio antenna on top of a hotel roof, but when it moved from building to building with alacrity, there was no mistaking that the cat was coming back.

With weather conditions back within the boundaries of what is safe to sail these boats in, Alinghi treated today as a full race day in anticipation of the 33rd America’s Cup Match, scheduled to start 8 February. The boat docked out at 08:00 and the full race crew set a course for a start line about 30 nautical miles offshore, near the outer boundary of the race box as defined in the Notice of Race.

“We tried to emulate a race day as much as possible,” said team skipper and tactician Brad Butterworth. “Every day like this is good for us. We just need more of them.”

“It was a fun day,” said bow team member Rodney Ardern. “We’re happy to continue our learning curve.”

The conditions offshore were as good as can be expected. The crew sailed the 40-nautical-mile windward/leeward course that is scheduled as the first and third (if needed) race of the match in a 12-15 knot westerly.

“It was good to get everyone in position and run a full race procedure,” Ardern said. “People, placement and spares, it was a good day.”

Back dockside as the sun was setting team members swarmed the boat. Six people working near the bowsprit, wrestling to get a bag under the jib and secure it for the night. The crewmembers all stepped on the scale to get their weight before heading off to change out of their full foul weather gear. “It’s a lot different from Ras Al Khaimah,” Butterworth said. “It’s cold out there and the wind is very heavy.”

But with 10 days to the start of the 33rd Match, Alinghi will take every day it can on the water.

saludos
