Dear Sirs., I usually sail in diferent pleasure boats (both in Portugal and in Spain) and in order to increase my safety I was considering buying a PLB so that I could take it with me on any boat I go onboard. Unfortunately in Spain it is not allowed to register a PLB to a person only. It has also to be registered to a boat and a MMSI. Basically it is considered as an EPIRB and not a PLB. I was wondering if it is possible to buy a PLB in UK and register it with you under my name only (as a PLB and not an EPIRB). If so, would I be rescued in case I activate it in Portuguese or Spanish costal watters? Thank you and kind regards, RMR2ENG -------------------------------------------------------------- Re: PLB REGISTRATION - DOUBTS From:Dave Searle (Dave.Searle@mcga.gov.uk)Sent:25 September 2012 10:41:52To: RMR2ENG Dear Sir, We recommend that a PLB is registered in the country of residence of the owner. As yet some countries do not permit this unless the PLB is programmed for a vessel or aircraft. As the popularity of PLBs increases, more countries are permitting registration to individuals. We are happy to register PLBs for non-UK residents where the facility to register does not yet exist in the country of residence. When the country starts to permit registration of PLBs, we may request that you reprogram the PLB and register it in your own country. To register a UK PLB, please visit our web page www.dft.gov.uk/mca/epirb If you have further questions, please contact me. Kind regards, David -- David Searle UK Distress & Security Beacon Registry Maritime & Coastguard Agency, Falmouth
