Sailing slightly faster and more efficiently, the crew of GAES Centros Auditivos have just scored a coup by taking the lead at the 13:30 UTC position update.

Pepe jumped up to the weatyher deck after passing the Ambrose red/white buoy and proclaimed, “We’re out!” We had been trading tacks with a gaining Safran and though we had lost the ¼ mile lead we had created since the mouth of New York Harbor, Pepe and Ryan were starting to trade smiles for the first time since probably before their rig came down three weeks ago. The expected fading of the seabreeze near sunset saw the pair gradually shaking out larger sails which made for a constant shuffling above and below decks. It may seem that these are spurts of effort but add in Pepe’s never ending use of the hand held compass to gauge gains and losses onthe other three teams, and Ryan’s regular house cleaning of all the lines and you have quite a little factory scene. Overlay the 20 or so tacks out the harbour with the fact that Ryan had spent more than an hour sorting out a software problem that disabled the ships computer and you have a fatigued bunch already. The two seem to be quick to adjust to even small wind changes and are always with an eye on the others. The stress of the last few weeks has shown its face. Pepe popped a few pills inbetween grinding in the large sails, when asked if it was Advil he said, “no, it’s for my stomach. When I get nervous I get a stomach ache. Last two days I have been very nervous so I take this.” Who could blame him. But his a
