On the evening of Saturday, May 17, 2025, the Mexican Navy’s training ship Cuauhtémoc collided with the Brooklyn Bridge in New York City, resulting in two fatalities and multiple injuries. Cause of the Accident Preliminary reports indicate that the Cuauhtémoc experienced a mechanical failure leading to a loss of power around 8:26 p.m. EDT. This malfunction caused the vessel to drift uncontrollably in reverse, directing it toward the Brooklyn Bridge—a route it was not intended to take. The ship’s three towering masts, each approximately 147 feet tall, struck the underside of the bridge, snapping upon impact and causing significant damage to the vessel . Casualties and Injuries At the time of the collision, 277 individuals were aboard the Cuauhtémoc. The incident resulted in the deaths of two crew members and injuries to at least 19 others, with several reported in critical condition . Dramatic footage captured sailors clinging to the rigging as the masts collapsed, though fortunately, no one fell into the water . Emergency Response and Aftermath Emergency services, including the NYPD, FDNY, and the U.S. Coast Guard, responded swiftly to the scene. Injured individuals were transported to nearby hospitals for treatment. The Brooklyn Bridge was temporarily closed for inspections but was reopened after officials confirmed it had sustained no structural damage . The Cuauhtémoc, a vessel often used for international goodwill missions, had been docked at Pier 17 for public tours and was scheduled to depart for Iceland as part of a 254-day voyage visiting 22 ports in 15 countries . Following the accident, the ship was relocated under the Manhattan Bridge with the assistance of tugboats. Investigations into the exact cause of the mechanical failure are ongoing, with the National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB) leading the inquiry. The Mexican Navy has pledged full cooperation with U.S. authorities to determine the factors contributing to this tragic incident . Saludos.
