SPANISH FISHING CREW MEMBER FLOWN TO HOSPITAL
Clyde Coastguard were contacted at just after 8.00 a.m. this morning by the Spanish Coastguard based in Madrid who reported that they were aware of a crewman from a fishing vessel `Agoretta who had sustained a head injury but that the vessel was within the United Kingdoms search and rescue area.

The vessel was reported to be in heavy weather with moderate visibility and south westerly winds of force 7 to 8 locally. Clyde Coastguard then set up a link call between an on shore accident and emergency doctor at Aberdeen Royal Infirmary via the UK Coastguard interpreting service, and it became clear that the 46 year old Spanish crewman from La Corunna needed evacuation from the vessel to a medical facility ashore, as his symptoms indicated he may have a possible head fracture after falling in heavy seas.

In the meantime, due to the current position of the vessel, the Irish Coastguard were contacted at Malin Head and a rescue helicopter was scrambled from Sligo to the vessel. The helicopter then intends to return to Sligo hospital with the casualty at around lunchtime today.

Stuart Atkinson, Clyde Coastguard Watch Manager said

We were very pleased to be able to assist our Spanish counterparts in this way today. We have very good systems in place to link ourselves, language specialists, doctors and the vessel in order to ensure we completely understand the situation on board many hundreds of miles away. This long distance `triage then assists the medical professionals ashore by understanding the casualtys symptoms and ensuring the correct medical treatment is given as soon as the casualty arrives back ashore.
