Se me olvidaba otro interesante detalle para argumentar las favorables condiciones para la flota hasta este momento en relación a otras ediciones, el SMA de Paul Meilhat que es el barco con en el que Gabart ganó hace 4 años, va como 600 millas por delante de como iba hace 4 años con Gabart a estas alturas de regata...

Me inscribí en la regata el jueves a las 12, cuando salía Didac... pero el sistema te pone más adelante... estaba el 299.400 o algo así...

Ahora me he lanzado a pasar por en medio del Santa Elena... parece que hay hueco... A ver qué pasa!

Alguno de los cofrades parece que también va por ahí...

Proa al abrigo de Fernando de Noronha a bucear la quilla a ver lo que le pasa, pues escuchó un golpe, y mejor revisarla ahora, antes de bajar a los infiernos del sur.

In association with the VPLP team, Guillaume Verdier designed twelve of the 29 boats taking part in the 2016 Vendée Globe, including the eight frontrunners.

Twelve days into the race and there have been no official announcements of boats retiring. How do you feel about that?

“I'm really pleased about that, of course. It's something that always worries me. I'm the person in charge of structures, so it’s the most worrying aspect, more than performance. The boats haven’t yet been through any storms. They have got where they are without any bad weather and the equipment hasn’t been affected. It’s the first time we have seen so many boats over the Equator. That’s fantastic. The only negative point is that Tanguy de Lamotte encountered an unusual problem (mast head damage - editor).”

What do you think about Alex Thomson’s performance?

“I’m not surprised to see him in front. He’s the one who went for the riskiest design choices. Alex has a boat that is not such a good all-rounder as the other foilers, but when conditions are favourable, he is quicker. Hugo Boss’s hull isn’t that different from the other foilers. But there is a difference with the size of the foils, and a considerable difference in terms of lift. That is what has made the difference in terms of performance. It’s a giant leap forward coming up with such a huge appendage. The fact that the foil pushes harder means there is less resistance, and so he can go faster.”

Do you think Alex is pushing his boat harder than those chasing him?

“No, I don’t think so. But as his average speeds are higher, it must be more stressful for him. He needs to be careful to make sure the boat withstands this. More so than his rivals. He is going to have to be very careful in stormy weather and in the Southern Ocean and pull up his foils sufficiently early.”

El Boss lleva unos foils más grandes, más sustentación = más velocidad.

Parece que el grupo delantero, y especialmente AT van a fondo hasta que dure.

Si nadie rompe, les quedan cerca de tres días de condiciones voladoras. La baja que les impulsa lleva un rumbo sur-este y parece que la perderán en el límite de hielo. Ahí les quedará, imagino, un mar infernal y unas horas de poco viento hasta la llegada de la siguiente, que ya les llevará en 2-3 días más hasta la entrada en el índico.

Tal como explica Verdier en la entrevista que comparte Xinanhook, AT es algo más rápido, y estará mejor colocado durante tres días. Veremos cuanto es capaz de meterles a los que le persiguen. Cuando pierdan la baja, sus perseguidores recibirán el viento antes que él, a ver si le recuperan lo suficiente.

Es la primera regata de vuelta al mundo que sigo en que la meteo se alía con los regatistas con tanta precisión. Quedan 2500 millas a la entrada en el índico, que a este ritmo son 5-6 días. Se plantan en el índico en 18-19 días que son 4 menos que Gabart en la anterior Como esto siga así dan la vuelta en menos de 70 días

Acabo de ver que AT ha bajado la velocidad a 14... que no sea nada.

RECORDS-BREAKERS?

The speedos are going crazy! An average speed of 23 knots over the past few hours for the leader Alex Thomson (Hugo Boss), who has been sailing since Friday evening ahead of a cold front coming out of the Bay of Rio and who clocked up 525 miles in the past 24 hours in the last rankings. This front is associated with a deepening area of low pressure going from 1001 hPa to 971 hPa and which is moving east-south-eastwards at 25-30 knots. This movement towards the Fifties is very favorable for the frontrunners, who are speeding along at more than twenty knots. They will be able to stay on the southern edge of this low for three days. After that they will be propelled by another low coming out of Argentina this weekend, which will take over at 45°S.

A real boost

The northerly air stream will continue to flow off the island of Tristan da Cunha, strengthening to 25-30 knots in the squalls. It is this second low, which will propel the leaders to the longitude of Cape Agulhas, which marks the entry point into the Indian Ocean. This strong downwind flow should enable thm to pass under an area of high pressure with light winds, which is establishing itself mid-week under the horn of Africa. The St Helena high is very volatile over the coming days with the establishment of a second centre off Cape Frio while the first one is shrinking and moving eastwards early in the week.

It is this new situation in the South Atlantic, which will create a chasm between the frontrunners and their closest rivals, who will also have to watch the boats behind them narrow the gap. We can expect only the Magnificent Seven at the front to benefit from this kick up the rear, with an extra bonus for those right out in front: Alex Thomson is likely to increase his lead over Armel Le Cléac’h (Banque Populaire VIII) 130 miles back and Sébastien Josse (Edmond de Rothschild) 148 miles behind. Thanks to his downwind position to the south, the British sailor is benefiting from steadier and stronger winds allowing him several tenths of a knot of extra speed…

The speed differential is essentially down to this difference in positioning, as in 24 hours, Armel Le Cléac’h has lost 20 miles from the leader, just like Sébastien Josse and Morgan Lagravière (Safran), while Jérémie Beyou gave up 70 miles in one day. The skipper of Maître CoQ is just on the edge of hanging on to the high-speed Atlantic train and is expected to see two knots of speed less in the coming days. The difference between foilers and boats with straight daggerboards is clear: Vincent Riou (PRB) and Paul Meilhat (SMA) are getting the most out of their monohulls, but they cannot keep up the same pace as the new foilers, seeing 60 to 80 miles less per day over the past three days, so the toll has been high as they approach Tristan da Cunha.

AT va ahora a sólo 14,6 nudos, la nueva borrasca que se está formando en latitud 30 S se irá reforzando a partir de esta tarde...y se empieza a mover, tren para Buena Esperanza a punto de partir!!!...

Habrá que ver quien llega al tren y quien se queda atrás. Parece que los siete primeros casi seguro que lo harán, hasta J. Beyou..

Mmmmmm raro raro lo de AT!

Cuelgo un par de capturas donde podemos ver que navegan con la misma intensidad de viento. Y en horas anteriores AT al ir más al sur tenía más viento.

Además esta a punto de batir el record que tenía Gabart en la última Vendée
530 millas en una singladura, lleva 525 , veremos próxima hora...
Es cierto que para este grupo de favoritos la meteo la han sabido aprovechar
al máximo, THOMSON a excepción de una trasluchada que hiza hacia tierra en
la costa portuguesa esta impecable. Mucha táctica el primer mes, muy duro el segundo y pura resistencia el último.Sorprndido tambien con el comportamiento
de los barcos hasta ahora, veremos de aquí en adelante.

Muy cierto, hasta ahora, y sin restarles mérito, los primeros de la flota no han sufrido, pero ya les llegara el verano 😉 que esto es muy largo, que se lo digan a Alex Thompson, que tiene experiencia...
