A Chat with Juan Vila

BYM News reporter, Santiago Robatto, talked this evening with Juan Vila, navigator for Alinghi.

Robatto said "There are a lot of "armchair" tacticians out there, who know better than those doing the sailing. The consensus is that Alinghi lost race 3 by not covering ETNZ on the final run. On the face of it, being in front, in a faster boat, that did look to have been the obvious tactic. You decided to split so, presumably, there must have been a downside to covering; could you explain it?"

Vila replied "Our weather information decided our tactics. All the weather information we had, yesterday, indicated that the split from Emirates Team New Zealand was the right move and that is why we didn't go for the normal match racing tactics and cover ETNZ. Today was another story; a very different race where we had far more stable conditions and that is what let us win."
Asked about the mood among the Alinghi afterguard, Vila said that the "3 Alinghi Kings" are doing what they do really well "working together in the best interests of Alinghi."

Tomorrow will be a day for the team to relax, but they will be studying the videos, as they do every day, but now this always gets to be a deeper study in which all the last races are analyzed to get feed back of the weak points and the strong ones.

Le preguntan por qué Alinghi no marcó en la segunda y tercera regata, contesta que según las predicciones de viento que tenían, marcar no era la táctica correcta, aun yendo delante como en la última popa ( )

Dice también que con viento más estable como el de ayer en la cuarta regata sí es buena táctica cubrir y por eso han navegado diferente ayer.

Preguntado por el ambiente en la popa del alinghi responde "Los tres reyes de Alinghi (supongo de Butterworth, Baird y Bertarelli) están haciendo lo que hacen muy bien, trabajando juntos por lo intereses de alinghi"
