Dear Rick,
I have just recived the information on the HC 48T you sent to me, thanks a lot.
I am amazed to learn the STIX is as low as 32,5 for a 48 footer as nice and seaworthy as the HC 48T looks like. Almost in the limit to qualify in Category A under the RCD.
The reason for such a low figure is due to the FDS factor (Factor of Dynamic Stability), which is very low (only 0,53), as the other STIX's factors are good enough.
It seems to me the stability curve has a low positive area, with the maximum GZ being under 0,5 m, and the downflooding angle considered (86º) is also surprisingly low. Also the maximum GZ happens at aropund 40º, which is a low figure when compared with the ususal 50º to 70º range most boats are within, as well as the 114,5º AVS is also considered low for an oceanic globetrotter, even if complying with the minimum 100º required by the ISO 12217.
I imagine all this is probably due to the relatively low freeboard of this classic design when compared with modern trends.
All this makes the boat unsafe? Cretainly not, but anyway it would have been desirable to have a better (higher) figure for the STIX. As the freeboard is not possible to be increased, perhaps it woud be possible to increase the downflooding angle, presently too low to my taste. It has been taken as the angle to the main acces hatch but, has it been taken to one of its low corners or to one of the top corners? This is important as when heeling the boat it is usually the upwards corner the one through wich the flooding begins,as usually it is the corner in the lowest position when the boat is inverted, thus significantly increasing the downflooding angle to be considered for the calculations (the area under the GZ curve to the Dfl increases correspondingly, thus increasing FDS).
Most probably all this has already been considered by the calculating person and the downflooding angle is so low because when heeled over the side the very high displacement of the boat makes the "draught" in that position to be very deep and so the lower corner becomes the relevant one to be considered.

No, me doy por muy satisfecho y creo que todos tambien por la razon que puntua bajo, de hecho al hacer el calculo tambien me salia un FDS impropio de un barco de este porte. Yo lo retoque a mano estimando y entonces me salio hacia 48 ( error mio ).
Bueno pues acabas de demostrar que hay excepciones
Por lo tanto si que se demuestra lo ya sabido e incluido en el STIX y es que las areas positivas deben de ser los mas grandes posibles y las negativas lo mas pequeñas posibles, y si9 en este barco no lo han hecho asi, pues han fallado, como en el angulo de inundacion de solo 86º.

, pero como tu sabes muy bien esto no suele ser habitual ( digo lo de barco con STIX tan raros). Nos podrias decir cuantos mas hay en el mercado como el HC 48?
Por cierto te invito a calcular el STIX del Hanse 531, que puntua solo 39 para su 53 pies largos a ver si averiguas donde esta su fallo
