Hydra - CRY Class 40 5G

Owen Clarke Design's fifth generation class 40 is built to the class minimum weight and while it is a series production design built from female tooling there remain options for clients to customise based on their own requirements and experience. The first of the series has been purchased by a Corinthian sailor to campaign in the RORC Fastnet Race this season, before building up to transatlantic races in the future. At the time of writing, boat #2 is in build, is available for purchase and launch by the end of Summer 2017.

The Cape 40 5G has been designed to suit a range of conditions including heavy reaching, as well as a range of angles in light and moderate wind speeds. The cockpit has been designed with three versions available and can be optimised for crewed or single handed racing, with a 4 or 5 cockpit winch layout. In addition, for a Class 40 purely focused on Trans-Atlantic races, the winches can be moved inboard and the coach-roof extended to give the skipper maximum protection similar to IMOCA 60 designs, For those not used to Class 40 sailing, the team sailing Hydra to Norway recently experienced what we call 'easy miles'.

Drinking a coffee while the boat sat on the surf at 22 kts for minutes at a time and with a top speed on delivery of 25.9 kts. Boat captain Tristan Kinloch after the delivery reported: "Just a quick note to say all went well on the trip. She is a beast ! .....Considering we were in delivery mode and about .5 tonne more gear on board than we would like the downwind performance was superb. A5 and 1 reef kept the nose out of the steep North Sea chop and we had some big numbers and average speeds."
